About the Faculty
The Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences was created by the Department of Economics to cater for the demands of stakeholders who apparently are in favour of the departure from the traditional economics education and training in Ibadan, which used to be a highly concentrated one encompassing all aspects of management related areas of economics, business administration, banking and finance, and accountancy as well as marketing. These courses have become standalone disciplines and academic programmes and departments in many other institutions across the world, the emergence of which could be traced to the industrial revolution of the 1750s to 1850s with attendant emergence of big business entities with complex management problems; the significantly increased need for funding and banking services which led to the development of banking practices and specialized financial entities/institutions; and the recognition of and emphasis on accounting and accountability in complex business institution and the public sector. However, economics has remained the foundation of these disciplines. Department of Economics transformed into a full fledge faculty in 2016/2017 session with the name of School of Economics, which later became Faculty of Economics, and finally changed to Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences. The transformation to Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences affords all the stakeholders the opportunity to envision the joint development of all the break-away disciplines within the ambit of similar core values in Ibadan.
The Faculty commenced academic programmes in 2017/2018 sessions with postgraduate programmes in Banking and Finance, Accounting as well as Marketing and Consumer Studies, together with the already established undergraduate and postgraduates proagmmes in the Department of Economics. Having gone through resource verification exercises and the sub-sequent approval from the NUC for the Department of Banking and Finance, Accounting and Marketing and Consumer Studies to commence undergraduate programmes, the 2023/2024 academic session marks the inaugural undergraduate session for the three departments.
Teaching and Learning Environment
The Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences has a state-of-the-art learning environment that is quite conducive to teaching and learning. The Central Bank Centre of Excellence (CENEF) Building serves the postgraduate students and provide limited office facilities to staff, while the facilities held at the Faculty of the Social Sciences and the other facilities of the Faculty are available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Future of the Faculty
With the commencement of undergraduate programmes in all departments, and with strong postgraduate programmes, the Faculty looks into a very bright future with great potentials of becoming a world class Faculty in the arena of Economics and Management Sciences.
